Smashburger Adds Mex Burger Nationwide

Smashburger is again adding a national specialty burger alongside its menu of customized and locally themed burgers. The Fresh Mex Burger will be offered until April 29. To drive trial, Smashburger has a coupon on its Facebook page that gets users a free entrée with purchase of the Fresh Mex Burger or flanker Fresh Mex Chicken sandwich.

The build begins with Smashburger’s 5.3-oz. or 7.5-oz. Angus beef patty. It’s topped with sliced avocado, chopped cilantro, onion, pepper-Jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and spicy chipotle mayo on a Mexican roll. As with its other specialties, it’s $5.99/$6.99, depending on patty size. A lime wedge is served on the side. The same toppings are available on a chicken breast.

Its first national LTO was the fried-egg-topped Sin City Smashburger, first offered in its Las Vegas location and then taken national in January 2011.

Smashburger had 143 restaurants at the end of 2011, 51 of which it opened last year. After entering 12 new markets in 2011, it plans to add 50 to 70 locations this year. New markets targeted include San Francisco, Boston and Washington, D.C.

The amount (and size) of cilantro in that picture worries me. Looks very overpowering. The description alone sounds like there’s just too much going on with this burger. Don’t get the inclusion of a lime…am I supposed to squeeze it on the burger? I’ll stick with my Original Smashburger.
