Mais Oui! A Goat Cheese Burger from McDonald’s

Those who’ve hoped McDonald’s would follow Wendy’s lead and introduce a burger topped with blue cheese are in luck. As long as they’re in France. 

McDonald’s/France further burnishes its global reputation for innovative menu development with three new burgers as parts of a “Big Cheese Cravings” promotion (“Les Grandes Envies de Fromages”). One is topped with Bleu, and one has Cantal, an Auvergne regional favorite.

The third “Cheese Craving” is the Chevre, which I believe is the first goat-cheese-topped burger from a major quick-service chain. The Vancouver, Wash.-based Burgerville chain tried a Balsamic Strawberry & Goat Cheese Panino in June 2009, but hasn’t yet paired goat cheese and a burger.

I know there are independent burger joints that have ventured into goat cheese territory, and we should applaud them. The #5 at DMK Burger Bar here in Chicago is a bison burger with goat cheese, pickled red onions and blueberry barbecue sauce. No doubt there are others. But no doubt, too, you never expected a goat cheese burger from McDonald’s.

It was McDonald’s/France that last November introduced burgers on bagels, pita bread and focaccia. On Feb. 23, it will introduce its first burger made with locally raised Charolais beef.
