Menu Inflation? Chains Are Still Hungry

Top chains aren’t acting like they believe their menus are overstuffed. McDonald’s has at least one new variety of its Angus Third Pounder (and likely two or more) and Wendy’s is in test with a new upscale chicken sandwich.

There were reports last week that McDonald’s was readying a Chipotle Angus Third Pounder for a Feb. 1 introduction, but if so that’s not a national debut. That’s because southern Wisconsin and other markets already have unveiled a Chipotle BBQ Bacon Angus Third Pounder, a sandwich that pretty effectively raids the McDonald’s condiment cupboard of several trendy ingredients. It’s marketed as a $5.99 combo meal.

Perhaps McDonald’s will bring north the double-decker Angus Premium it markets in Argentina.

Another high-end sandwich is the Asiago Chicken Club sandwich that Wendy’s has added as an LTO in Portland, Ore., and other selected markets. It also recycles flavors from existing items: ranch dressing, tomato, lettuce, bacon, Asiago cheese and chicken fillet. It’s priced at $4.69 or $6.49 for a combo. With tax that’s edging toward $7.

Burger King, meanwhile, is establishing its Steakhouse brand as a global flanker burger to the Whopper. In addition to the Jalapeño & Cheddar BK Stuffed Steakhouse just added in the U.S., the chain has a Bourbon Steakhouse in Brazil, a Swiss Fondue Steakhouse in Germany, an Angus Steakhouse in Hong Kong and a Steakhouse César in Argentina.
