Burger King Goes Angus in England, All-World in Japan

Burger King’s pan-European advertising campaign behind its Whopper has barely gotten going and the chain already has jumped back to promoting its Angus burgers. New this week at BK locations in the United Kingdom is the 3 Cheese Angus, a burger that includes America’s new favorite and omnipresent topping, applewood-smoked bacon. The three cheeses are Grana Padano, Irish Cheddar and Parmesan (featured in a sauce). It’s BK’s first new Angus burger in the UK since the debut of the Bacon Caesar Angus last September. Crispin Porter + Bogusky also handles BK advertising in the UK.
In December, Burger King launched the “Taste is king” campaign for its signature sandwich across multiple European countries. In the UK, the chain rolled out the Whopper Bacon Cheese. Last month, it veered away from burgers altogether with a £2.49 Crispy Chicken sandwich deal.
And then there’s Japan, where Burger King is countering McDonald’s “Big America” series of quarter-pound burgers with four all-world Whoppers. McDonald’s has Texas, New York, California and Hawaiian burgers. Burger King has introduced the first of four new Whoppers: American/BBQ, Italian/Spicy, Malaysian/Black Pepper and hometown fave Japan/Teriyaki. Why a paint brush is the culinary symbol for teriyaki I haven’t figured out, and probably don’t want to know.
