Monday News-Nugget Catch-Up for 10/12

 Fourth quarter has begun, ladies and gentlemen. Last call for bold, new menu and marketing ideas. Wendy’s “You know when it’s real” has charms, but is it head-turning charm? Or will it be simply another update of the 1985 commercial here that sings “That’s fresh. That’s class. That’s Wendys”?

A&W has introduced $4 Combos that include not only three new burgers but also a Johnsonville brat that adds a flavorful new menu dimension for fall. 

Ruby’s Diner recently began selling frozen cheeseburger sliders under its own brand in Costco. Now it extends the franchise in its restaurants with Breakfast Sliders (a clever take on eggs Benedict) and Kobe-blue-cheese sliders.

Krystal’s current special is the Crispy Onion Krystal mini. Watch for the chain to take this idea full size in November with a Wild & Crispy Big Angus Burger

► The burger business needs new synonyms for “big.” In Asia, McDonald’s promotes a Mega Mac while in Mexico, Burger King has rolled out the Mega Angus XT (in classic, mushroom and guacamole variations).

► We Americans aren’t the only ones who believe bacon makes it better. In France and Spain, McDonald’s now offers its sophisticated “Le M” burger with bacon. It’s still the best-looking burger bun around.
