Burger King’s latest attempt to get chicken chunks right is at the heart of the Winter Menu it announced on Jan. 2. The all-new (now with “premium white meat”) Chicken Nuggets have a “crispy tempura-style batter” for extra crunch. Arriving with them are new dipping sauces that cover the six basic QSR tastes: Honey Mustard; Ranch; Sweet and Sour; Buffalo; Barbecue and Zesty. Prices range from $1 for a four-piece serving through $1.99 for six, $2.69 for 10 and, beating McDonald’s McNugget price promotion, $4.29 for 20.
You may recall that Burger King rolled out “new” Chicken Tenders in March 2011, replacing the odd crown-shaped chicken snacks it had before that. A year later, there was more new chicken: Chicken Strips and Crispy Chicken Snack Wraps. Now it’s new Nuggets.
The Winter Menu—originally tipped on GrubGrade—has a variety of limited-time items, including one burger: the Avocado Swiss Whopper is topped with avocado aïoli and priced at $4.49 (or $2.19 in Whopper Jr. size).
Two new chicken sandwiches also are included. The $4.29 Philly Original Chicken sandwich is topped with red and green bell pepper, grilled onions and cheese on a toasted-sesame bun. The $4.29 Italian Original Chicken Sandwich has a thick, melty slice of mozzarella and marinara sauce.
For snackers there are Cheesy Tots with a mixture of potato and cheese on the inside. Price start at $1.99 for eight-piece packs. Finally Molten Fudge Bites have a brownie exterior and “molten chocolate” inside. Prices start at $1.69. For $2.29 the Fudge Bites become the bases for a sundae.
• Meanwhile, Sonic Drive-In is sticking with its belief that really, really thick toast is the ideal sandwich wrapper. The chain this week rolls out three Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, each of which uses two wedges of Texas Toast. Varieties are the Cheddar Bacon Ranch Grilled Cheese (bacon, smoky bacon ranch sauce and two slices of Cheddar), BLT Grilled Cheese (bacon, lettuce, tomato and American cheese) and Philly Steak Grilled Cheese (grilled onions, marinated steak and melted Cheddar). The chain’s new Breakfast Toaster sandwiches use the same thick toast.
