Sonic Drive-In fills a competitive gap in its menu with the introduction of a new line of Premium Chicken sandwiches. The feature sandwiches are Crispy or Grilled Asiago Caesar Chicken sandwiches that feature white-meat chicken, tomato, lettuce, a signature Caesar dressing and sliced Asiago cheese on warm, whole-grain ciabatta buns.
Less-dressed-up Crispy Chicken and Grilled Chicken sandwiches, also on whole-grain ciabatta buns, complete the line.
Sonic has been actively developing new menu items this year and adding some innovative products while competitors brought out premium burgers and chicken sandwiches. Sonic did revive its Jumbo Popcorn Chicken snack item early in 2012. Since then it has added Wholly Guacamole and Chili Cheese Fritos Coney Dogs; Cheesesteak and Smoked Chipotle Breakfast Burritos; and, in August, the Hickory FlatMelts sandwich line. The chain hasn’t added a significant new burger since its Bacon Cheddar Toaster Melt a year ago. A Loaded Burgers line was tried in 2010 but then dropped.

The May Burger of the Month at R.J. Grunts in Chicago is the Chihuahua Burger. That's a ground chuck and sirloin patty topped with Chihuahua cheese, jalapeño cabbage slaw, pickled red onion, cilantro, and Cholula garlic aïoli.
