Monday Meeting: Whoppers, Jumbo Jacks and Fries

And we’re worried about soft drinks larger than 16 ounces? Burger King is marking its 5th anniversary in Japan with the limited-time offer a five-patty Whopper. And to make excess more accessible, the chain has cut the price from ¥1,100 (roughly $14) to just ¥550 ($7). A large combo with fries and a drink will set you back ¥1,000 ($12.70) though.

This is neither the first nor the worst over-the-top burger Burger King has offered in Japan. Two years ago it celebrated the arrival of Windows 7 with a seven-layer Whopper.

Consider the size of the Whopper Burger King might unveil to toast its joint venture in China. On Friday the chain announced an agreement that calls for 1,000 restaurants in China to open over the next seven years. Its partners are private-equity firm Cartesian Capital Group LLC and Istanbul-based TAB Gida Industry and Trade Co. The latter reportedly operates more than 450 Burger Kings in Turkey.

Jack in the Box’s quiet courtship of country-music fans gets louder and get national in the next week with a TV spot featuring performer Brad Paisley. The chain recently has ventured into the Southeast with stores in Louisiana, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. Two TV spots featuring Jack and Paisley promoting the Jumbo Jack with Cheese burger began airing only in the Southeast earlier this month.

Additionally, Jack in the Box has had its mega version of a food truck—the 26-foot-long Jack Burger Truck—on a burger-sampling tour of the Southeast. Stops have included the CMA Music Festival & Fan Fair in Nashville plus visits to Baton rouge, La.;Charlotte, N.C.; and Greenville, S.C.

"Fries!" A long journey to the punchline.

If you’re asked to explain the difference between marketing by McDonald’s and its competitors, you could point to “The Wind.” The idea behind this 1-minute commercial is that the aroma of the McDonald’s french fries being enjoyed by a couple in New York City is carried across the ocean to the coast of Scotland, where a bagpiper sniffs, smiles and says, “Ah. Fries!” The spot likely will be used around the world during coverage of the London Olympics. Only McDonald’s.
